Editorial bad girl Grace @ Cliche Model Management. Cutting loose on our latest shoot.

Grace is one cool customer when it comes to playing the part we create for her. This time was no exception, with her look and my kind of style we decided that we’d create a piece full of emotion and rage juxtaposed against the “pretty” fashions of Spring / early Summer. Simple styling, fresh colourful make-up, bright & punchy lighting. Something like if the Gap did a collaboration with Motley Crue……..

Lipstick & Skin

Shooting beauty work is a different set of challenges compared to say editorial or straight fashion portraits. With beauty, precision is key, perfection is the aim. Everything takes a lot longer, make-up prep, lighting set-up, time per shot, post production. For comparison a 2 hour portfolio development shoot can easily net four outfits and a whole bunch of different shots for a model. Whereas a two hour beauty session is one look and probably one final image.
It’s all about flawless skin and perfect make-up.
Here are a couple of fresh images from a shoot a couple of weeks ago. Here I was working with Thembi Mkandla makeup artist, using product from MAC and Armani. Our model for the day was Anna of Boss Model Management.

Two days, Three faces. (Less Gear, More Photo)

Tuesday saw me working with A-Models and Meg Lindow MUA. Here I had the luck to work in some beautiful light with Logan and Sophia.

Then after a rather late night call up Wednesday saw me working with Boss Models Anna Caradice-French and the always charming Thembi Mkandla MUA. Again spoilt by glorious light.

All three of these photographs used natural light, just goes to show the diversity of what can be achieved with minimal equipment.

Exhaustive kit list used for these;

Leica M9 – 50mm

Contax G2 – 45mm – Fujifilm film stock.

That’s it, about as simple as you can get. My kind of shoots these.

Not enough sway is given to developing ones style these days. The current trend appears more equipment driven and not learning the craft, art and soul of photography. Style can not be bought, faked, copied or forced. It comes through practise, dedication to your craft and natural development through spending time learning to understand what photography means to you personally.

I would personally say that I’m only just beginning to notice my style surface, I’ve learnt the more I try to concentrate on it the further away I end up from it.

So I use the ilovemyleica hashtag alot (A LOT) so I’m guessing it goes without saying that I really do indeed love my Leica. Why? is often the question I get asked, I kinda of feel the photographs I create with it answer that question but perhaps that’s a little short sighted of me (and glib of me). So I’ve been thinking of a non fan boy / preachy way of explaining why it seems that the Leica M is the tool I’m happiest using.

Compared to many other cameras on the market the M9 loses when it comes to statistics and tech specs and all that dull fluff. To me that stuff is just noise and sales crap, I live with my cameras, day in day out. It’s how using the camera makes me feel, it’s how it allows me to connect with my subject, how it gets out of the way and just lets me create the photographs I want to create with it. I understand it and it’s ways and in return it rewards me with beautiful colour rendition and stunning clarity. It handles light so very beautifully, it inspires me to hunt out interesting light and interesting situations. It just gives me a connection and intimacy with my subject that all other cameras I’ve used can make a little more awkward. The M9 allows me to concentrate on signal (Zack Arias) the sheer simplicity of it, camera, 50mm lens, aperture, shutter dial, iso setting. No autofocus, no HDR, no auto, no super high iso, no zoom, no snake oil, no magic wand. It makes me work to create photographs and more importantly it makes me think. I helps me put something of myself into my work by simply letting me work.
So hopefully without sounding like a sales pitch that explains a little my feelings towards the M9. It’s no review, it’s simply a statement of my opinion of how I work with the Leica.
Perhaps another reason is how my assistant once put it “Perhaps it’s because it isn’t the accepted tool.” I kind of agree that despite using a 5D2, I really do get sick of the same looking images coming from the same cameras. Plus I’ve never been one to follow the crowd. The 5D2 is (at the moment) a vital tool in my bag, however it is gradually getting dusty.

Do I lust after the new M? To be honest not really, yesterday I shot at iso 1250 and the images are beautiful. Yes there’s noise but there is also feeling and emotion. The one and only thing about the new M I wish for is the shutter noise (sad I know)

Do I lust after a Monochrom? hmmmmmmmmm . . . . . . 🙂 I wouldn’t say no to one but for my work It couldn’t be a one or the other, I’d still use the M9 that has so captured my admiration.

Truth.

Sorry, I told you it’s been a busy month or so. Absolutely loads of new work shot so it’s about time I get to sharing some of it on here. Here are a few of the crop of images I shot with the brilliant Thembi Mkandla of Kate Waldron. Thembi hit me up with an idea of finding the least “English” looking beach we could whilst still not travelling too far from Manchester to shoot some summery beauty and swimwear stuff for both our portfolios. We found an awesome location or three thanks to the help of Alan, another photographer I know. He scouted us some great spots, hooked us up with space to base ourselves, humped my gear, drove people around, got sandwiches, and basically acted as a first rate second assistant whilst Michael (my usual assistant wrestled with the Rotalux in the wind). The beautiful designs we managed to acquire for the shoot came via Roscoe Forsythe a great Manchester stylist I’m happy to have made contact with, he pulled pieces from Joanne Miller & Laura Bancroft and they really took the whole ting to another level.

A great team, great weather and slightly more production value than some of my recent “simple” shoots. Fell in love with the tiny Elinchrom pack (well my assistant did as he could lug the thing around all day on his shoulders and didn’t moan too much).

So all has been a little quiet on the blog over the last month, sorry gang. It’s been a fairly busy one for me lately, numerous tests, agency meetings and a new look book shot for Educate Elevate has had me fully dedicated to ensuring clients receive images on time.

So I have plenty to pop up on here it’s just a matter of finding the time to flesh out some words to go along side.

That being said, here are a few teasers from a test I shot yesterday for Cliche new boy Darren. Having a background in acting certainly helped him get into the mood for this look.
